The Bob Graham Round

The Bob Graham Round

I really enjoy mountaineering and trekking in wild places but you usually end up working very hard mainly because of all the gear and protective clothing you have to carry with you, this limits how far you can go and the speed you can get there.

When you come back home and head for your local hills again with a small rucsac and light shoes and clothing it feels like your hill walking has been given a turbo boost and you can go further and faster. Taking this light and fast approach one step further and you start getting into the realms of mountain running or Fell running. I`ve Spent a lot of time over the Lake District walking and camping and i was aware of the Bob Graham round for years and kept coming across sections of it on walks and my interest grew in as i got all the maps started studying it in detail and read the well known book ” Feet in the Clouds” by Richard Askwith . I started doing recce trips and one by one got to know quite well the 5 distinct legs that make up this tough fell running challenge. This culminated in July 2013 when during a week off i done a recce of the whole route over 5 days. To save carrying lots of food and stuff with me i done Leg 1 from Keswick to Threlkeld as a day trip and got the bus back to Keswick. The next day i done Leg 5 as a day trip too getting the bus from Keswick to Seatoller and walking up to Honister Pass from there and completing the leg back to Keswick. This left legs 2, 3 and 4 . These were done as a backpacking trip, getting the bus to Threlkeld and picking up the route from there, with overnight stops at Langdale (Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel – well it was torrential rain! – not much fun in a bivi bag) and then a bivi at Wasdale before completing the route to Honister the next day and getting the bus back to Keswick again. I was just getting to the stage where i was seriously thinking about trying to do it in 24 hours when i got an ankle injury….

In August 2013 we helped out with Adnan`s succesful Bob Graham Round attempt which he managed in an impressive 22 hours and 10 minutes.
